Goravan rugs

Goravan rugs, identical in design, color, and quality to Heriz rugs, feature large, single, octagonal medallions very distinctly delineated on a dark colored background.
Goravan is a small village in northwestern Iran, in close proximity to Heriz. The design, color, and quality of a Persian carpet from Goravan is so entirely identical to a Persian carpet from Heriz, that even experts in the field have great difficulty telling them apart. Although Heriz is the better known area, a Persian carpet woven in Goravan is every bit its equal. Typically, the Goravan Persian carpet is woven with a special Turkish symmetrical double knot that is dense and tightly packed, although occasionally the asymmetrical Persian knot is used.
A Persian carpet woven in Goravan frequently features geometric medallions sometimes referred to as shield patterns. They are large, single, octagonal medallions very distinctly delineated on a dark colored background, usually a very deep red or dark blue, with ivory as the contrasting color. The borders on this style of Persian carpet are generally large scale turtle designs. The beautiful colors on a Goravan Persian carpet are created from root and vegetable dyes. Newer carpets may use different color combinations such as light red and brown, with baby blue as the contrasting shade. This tends to create a very modern looking geometric tribal rug.
The foundation on a Goravan Persian carpet is cotton while the pile is wool. At one time carpet weaving was a time honored family tradition passed down from generation to generation.
Their carpets became treasured heirlooms that were kept in the family for centuries.
